Brickyard 400 Betting Odds

NASCAR bettors watched David Reutimann win the Lifelock.com 400 at Chicago two weeks ago and they certainly have to be seeing him as someone to be reckoned with, but just what did Reutimann's win mean, to himself and his teammate at Michael Waltrip Racing, Martin Truex? These gentlemen, who are outside the Chase picture at the moment, both need something big to put themselves squarely in contention, and they are matched up in a head-to-head proposition for the qualifying process. Qualifying takes place on Saturday at 10 AM ET (ESPN2) and the Brickyard 400 is set to begin at 1 PM ET on Sunday (ESPN). In the matchup, Reutimann is the betting favorite at -140, with Stewart at +110.

David Reutimann is known as one of the genuine "nice guys" in NASCAR, and though he doesn't finish last, as some say nice guys do, he has not won that often. In fact, he only had one previous victory, at the Coca-Cola 600 last year, and that was tainted in the minds of many because it was weather-shortened. But two weeks ago he held off Carl Edwards to win the Lifelock.com 400 at Chicagoland, making him a great longshot bet, and that was a win no one could say anything about. That was the culmination of three straight races where he improved his finishing position, but it was also only his fourth top ten result on the year. Still, he has climbed the standings, and is now in 15th place, less than a hundred points behind Clint Bowyer, who is in 12th place, and he is priced at +3000 in the betting odds to win this weekend's race.
Reutimann has been much better in qualifying. In fact, he has started in the top ten in six of his last ten races. He has started three times in the Brickyard 400, finishing 30th and 38th, then eighth last year, which was aided by the fifth spot in qualifying.
Reutimann's team, Michael Waltrip Racing, has appeared on the verge of a breakthrough for some time now. The owner (and occasional driver) is former Daytona 500 champion Michael Waltrip, brother of an even bigger legend, Darrell Waltrip, and this season, despite not being as well-heeled as many of the other teams, they've been extremely competitive, and that is a credit to Waltrip as well as his right hand, Ty Norris.
Does that bode well for the other member of that team, Martin Truex?
Truex looked like he might be on the move for a while, but he's stagnated a little, and it looks as if he might need some super-human efforts to get into the Chase. Truex (at +3500 in NASCAR betting this week) got as high as 12th in the Sprint Cup standings after Dover, where he won the pole and finished 12th. In a couple of events where no points were at stake, he also did very well - he won the Sprint Shootout, which qualified him for the All-Star Race, where he came second.
