The Formula 1 driver from Herts failed to claim a podium around the Hockenheim circuit as Fernando Alonso controversially took the chequered flag for Ferrari.
Felipe Massa was second in the other red Ferrari to complete a team one-two, with pole-sitter Sebastian Vettel third for Red Bull.
Alonso was gifted victory on lap 49 when team-mate Massa was very slow coming out of the turn six hairpin after receiving a coded message over the radio.
Hamilton’s fourth place, and the 12 points that came with it, helped him extend his lead over Jenson Button – who finished fifth – in the world drivers’ championship.

Hamilton is now 14 points ahead of his team-mate in the race for the title, with the Red Bull pair of Vettel and Mark Webber joint third on 136 points – 21 behind Lewis.
Both McLaren cars started from row three of the grid, with Jenson fifth and Lewis sixth.
Hamilton took Button off the line and then edged ahead of Webber on the first lap to claim fourth place behind the two Ferraris of Massa and Alonso and the Red Bull of Vettel.
The Tewin F1 racer found himself just half a second ahead of Webber after 12 minutes of the race, but managed to keep the Aussie at bay before entering the pits for prime tyres on lap 14 of 67.
Hamilton managed to exit the pits still ahead of Webber.
The team told him over the radio: “Lewis two cars ahead still have to stop, we have stayed in front of Webber.”
The 2008 world champion climbed back up to fifth when Robert Kubica pitted for Renault.
By mid distance, Hamilton found himself running fourth, nearly 10 seconds adrift of third-placed Vettel, with Massa and Alonso out in front.
Alonso later controversially took Massa all too easily for first place after instructions from the team, as the McLarens coasted home behind in fourth and fifth places.
The F1 drivers will be back on track next Sunday for the Hungarian Grand Prix
