Lance Armstrong
Lance Armstrong and his team, Team RadioShack were headed out for today’s stage of the race. Lance has been the winner of this big race many times but his last year to fully dominate was in 2005. Lance’s team hit the road early wearing their new black jerseys but were stopped at the official start line. Lance Armstrong and company were forced to remove their Livestrong jerseys and revert back to the usual red and gray at the Tour de France.
Basically as with any sports, the rules and regulations must be enforced. Moreover, changing team colors mid-stream is not only frowned upon but in many cases like this, the iron fist of the officials rule. The best part of the whole ordeal is that the guys sporting the new jerseys were the hot topic all around. The media coverage surrounding the black Livestrong jerseys and the officials forcing a change back to the Radioshack jerseys managed to create a stir that they team might not have even been able to pull off otherwise at the Tour de France.
The purpose of changing to the black jerseys was for the Radioshack team had hoped to ride this stage of the event in honor of cancer patients. The jerseys bore the number 28 which was to symbolize the 28 million people fighting cancer today. The long time cycling celebrity athlete from Teas was hoping to continue to raise awareness as he too suffered from cancer. The Radioshack team including Lance Armstrong held up the start of the race while they changed jerseys and pinned their numbers on the back of their original ones.
